When it comes to vintage Rolex, there are few references which command the auction market. One of those is the 6062 – a triple calendar moonphase wristwatch housed in a watertight Oyster case. An impressive combination of technical achievements for cheap replica watches introduced exactly 75 years ago.
The 6062 was introduced at the Basel Fair in 1950, with a small 350 examples produced over a three year period. It’s important to remember that whilst best clone Rolex watches are a market leader, it’s a brand which has pioneered commercialisation and production at scale, so it’s pretty rare to find something which was produced in the low triple digits.
Production numbers aside, some very interesting dials have been seen on this reference, contributing further to the collectability. Dials were produced by Créations Stern SA, the Stern family owned dial manufacturer which produced dials for a variety of brands. One of the more interesting dials it produced is the Stelline dial seen on the 6062, which features star hour markers. In 2017, one of these three, commissioned by His Majesty Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, went under the hammer at Phillips, selling for over $5 million, making it the most expensive top fake Rolex watches ever sold at the time, for a few months.
This present example, baring case number 942,536 is one of the other two black diamond dial 6062s featuring diamonds at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, resulting in an extra diamond and a slightly more symmetrical arrangement to Bao Dai’s example, which has the diamonds at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10. Cased in yellow gold, it features a matching yellow gold Tile Bracelet, if the original rarity and provenance wasn’t already enough.
This one appeared at Antiquorum back in 2006 as part of The Mondani Collection of perfect copy Rolex Wristwatches, fetching $391,000. A huge amount of money back then.
This weekend, it went under the hammer again at none other than Monaco Legend Group as part of their market leading Exclusive Timepieces auction.
The price you ask? $6.2 million, the highest ever for a reference 6062 and the third highest ever for a Rolex – a figure which reflects just how collectable this AAA+ fake watches really are.
